A Luther city council member who used racial slurs to describe other city leaders has resigned from office.

Gregg Atkinson turned in his letter of resignation Thursday afternoon after citizens called for his resignation at a city meeting Tuesday night.

"Due to circumstances beyond my control, I find myself in a position where I can no longer perform the duties I was elected to do and I will be resigning," Atkinson said to News 9.

Atkinson says he still plans to attend board meetings as a citizen to move the city forward.
