Week 5 High School Football Locker Room

Posted: Updated:

District play is heating up across the state this week. Fortunately, the temperature is beginning to drop which means we'll have real football weather soon enough. Hopefully the storms hold off on Friday because there are plenty of great games on the slate for this week.

Just like we do each and every week, we need your help to gather the scores from all the games across the stat. There are plenty of ways to do that, so help us out and send us the score from whichever game you're at each week.

Here's a look at some of the biggest games across the state this week.

Shawnee at McAlester

A huge Class 5A matchup will be taking place in McAlester Friday night as the No. 3 Buffaloes will play host to No. 4 Shawnee.

Both teams enter the contest 3-1, having lost games that are slightly puzzling in hindsight. The Buffaloes led Booker T. Washington 38-10 at one point in their game two weeks ago, but ended up falling, 47-45. Shawnee fell at home to Deer Creek, 41-21, which has since lost two straight games and is only 2-2.

Both teams are led by dynamic, dual-threat quarterbacks. For Shawnee, John Jacobs leads the offense, having passed for 802 yards with 11 touchdowns and four interceptions. He's added 356 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Dillion Dutton provides an excellent complement to Jacobs in the backfield, rushing for 375 yards and three touchdowns so far this season.

Through the air, Jacobs' favorite target has been Chris Lester, who leads Class 5A with 468 yards receiving yards and six touchdowns.

The Wolves also boast a stingy defense, giving up just 21 points per game through the first four games of the season.

For McAlester, quarterback Dalton Wood has been the engine that makes the McAlester offense go. He's already thrown for 943 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions to go with 601 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Jarome Smith leads the running backs with 334 yards and five touchdowns.

The Buffaloes boast a pair of stellar wide receivers in Cade Harkins and Caden Pratt who have combined for 631 yards and six touchdowns on 39 receptions.

The McAlester defense has been a bit porous to start the year, giving up over 30 points per game to start the year. However, the Buffaloes' run defense has been impressive thus far. Through the first three games, McAlester gave up just 144 yards per game.

Friday night will be a battle of wills between Shawnee and McAlester. The Wolves prefer to play slower and win low-scoring affairs, even though they put up 66 points on Tulsa Memorial last week. McAlester goes much quicker, averaging 50.5 points per game.

It should be a great game with plenty of fireworks. Both teams look to be early challengers to Guthrie and Carl Albert, but this game will prove which of the two really has what it takes to be a threat in Class 5A this year.

Carl Albert at Bishop McGuinness

This District 5A-2 showdown figures to be one of the best matchups across the state this week. Don't expect the clock to stop very much as both Carl Albert (3-1) and Bishop McGuinness (2-2) would prefer to keep the ball on the ground.

Carl Albert workhorse Stevie Thompson had a field day against Deer Creek last week, running for a career-high 341 yards and six touchdowns as the Titans won 42-24. The defending 5A champions are off to a much better start this season having beaten Coweta, Duncan and Deer Creek since losing the season opener against Southmoore. Of course, as the Titans (state champs after starting the season 1-5) proved a year ago, it's not how you start, but rather how you finish a season that counts.

Just a year ago Bishop McGuinness topped Carl Albert 42-32. This season's Irish aren't off to the same kind of start as last year but they're riding a two-game winning streak and are a week removed from a confidence-building 56-13 shellacking of El Reno. McGuinness' do-it-all quarterback Jacob Lewis nearly doubled his season touchdown total when he ran for four scores and passed for two more against the Indians.
