Wednesday marked the grand opening of the Moore office of the Oklahoma Disaster Recovery Project. The project is a joint effort of five local charities to help victims from this spring's tornadoes and flooding. It serves as a one stop shop for anyone affected by the May storms.

Those like Bridget Schilling who came to the Moore office on Wednesday with a simple request.

"A couch so we could have a place to sit and a table so (her daughter) Kiana would sit at a table and not on a bar stool and fall off every time she turns around," said Shilling.

Schilling's home in Moore suffered serious damage in the May 20 Tornado. She's now living in temporary housing in Edmond while her house is repaired.

"I continue to go, but there's some days I just want to give up," said Shilling.

For her and an estimated 2,500 other victims, the Disaster Relief Project is where they can now come for help. The American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, The Salvation Army, Society of St. Vincent De Paul, The Oklahoma United Methodist Church are all working together.

The help starts in the call center where workers still get 60 calls a day from storm victims. Victims are then assigned to a case manager.

"Our job is to take them from today to their full recovery in the future," said case manager Kenneth Bentley.

That's everything from furniture, to financial help, to assistance with dealing with FEMA.

"I can meet with a client. I can identify their needs. I can go back and within 15, 20 minutes have a recovery plan that addresses those needs," said Bentley.

That plan could include years of assistance. Or in Schilling's case, she left Wednesday with knowledge that furniture was being delivered to her home.

Disaster recovery project offices will stay open for two maybe even three years. One office is already open in El Reno. One in Shawnee is opening soon. Case workers can also come to you.

The Moore office is at 1700 South Broadway, Suite G. They encourage you to call the help line first and make an appointment.
