A Washington County jury convicted a Bartlesville man of first-degree murder Thursday in the death of his grandmother in October 2012.

It took the jury almost five hours of deliberations to convict Brandon Capps, 21.

Capps was accused of beating Clara Jean Hammer, 81, to death in her home.

The jury also found Capps guilty of five other counts, including unauthorized use of a vehicle, unlawful receipt of proceeds, petty larceny, driving without a license and possession of a controlled substance.

The jury recommended a life sentence on the murder charge and 30 months for each of the other charges.

The prosecution claimed that Capps knowingly killed his grandmother while Capps' defense argued her death was an accident.
