Paralyzed Edmond Woman Raising Funds For Treatment In India

Doctors told Shannon Davis she'd be paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of her life. She was only 34 at the time of the accident and could not accept that. So, she planned to prove them wrong and in many ways she has already.

"If you are not moving forward then you're going backwards," said Shannon Davis, who pushes herself every day and has come a long way since the rollover accident on August 25, 2007. "I remember a flash of a car coming to the left side and jerking my tires."

When Shannon Davis tried to correct, her car rolled several times across traffic. The car landed upside down in ditch. Davis remembers a man saying "Hold on, they are coming to cut you out."

The details of the crash get blurry from that point. After 12 days of surgery, Shannon discovered the accident had left her a quadriplegic. Doctors gave her little chance of ever moving her arms or walking again.

"I was telling everyone, 'No, that's not true. I will'," Davis said. She remembers thinking then about a plan to recover from the injuries.

Determined to defy the odds, Davis went through extensive rehab programs and traveled to Project Walk in California. It's where she learned of a new treatment.

"It was so controversial," she said.

After a year of careful consideration, she decided to try stem cell treatment in India.

"It's really quite remarkable. It's a third world country and it's a whole different experience," Davis said.

Davis said it was scary the first couple of times she went to India for treatment. She is planning to go again. Six years after the accident, she believes the stem cell treatment paired with a unique exercise program in the United State have led to the progress that even doctors initially thought would not be possible.

"I'm not going to give up as long as I am seeing recovery, " Davis said as she explained her goal is to be independent again.

Davis has most control of her arms and recently stood for two minutes with braces. She is still  considered a quadriplegic but Davis says she keeps getting stronger.

"I'm not going to stop, have come way too far and I plan on going a lot further," Davis said.

Davis is now raising money for her next treatment in India in the Fall. Family and Friends are hosting the 2nd Annual Shannon Davis Journey Golf Tournament on September 20, 2013 at John Conrad Gold Course in Midwest City. Davis plans to serve beverages during the tournament and is asking everyone to come out and show their support.
