The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office says suspects are conning residents out of cash by convincing them they owe money for outstanding warrants or fines.

The sheriff's office has received several calls about the scam. The perpetrators call the victims and claim they have outstanding warrants or fines. They claim the problem can be taken care of if the victim purchases a pre-paid Green Dot card, and that card can then be used to the pay the fines.

The sheriff's office says at least one person lost nearly $2,000 to the scam artists.

"We know of an elderly gentleman who's on disability who ended up losing $1700 as a result of this scam," said Sheriff Spokesperon Mark Myers.

Investigators warn residents if they are contacted by the scammers, do not comply with their demands. Deputies say you should write down the phone number and any contact information related to the suspects, call 911, and give the information to authorities.

"You think of today as being Labor Day, that we celebrate people going out and doing such hard work, so the last thing we want to see happen is them get taken advantage of and basically lose their hard earned money," Myers said.
