Norman police arrested a suspected drunk driver who reportedly drove on the train tracks and left his car in the path of an oncoming train Saturday night.

It happened just after 10 p.m. south of the railroad crossing at Tecumseh Road in Norman.

According to police, Derick Ray Mellican was intoxicated when he began driving northbound on the railroad tracks. Mellican reportedly left the car on the tracks, and it was hit by a northbound Amtrak passenger train.

Police say Mellican got out of the car before the train crashed into it. He was transported to the hospital and was treated and released.

Mellican was arrested on several charges, including public intoxication, obstruction of a railroad, and trespassing on railroad property. He was transported to the Cleveland County Justice Center.
