Oklahoma Students Improve AP Test Scores Through National Program

A national education program is making a big impact in our schools. The State Department of Education says more Oklahoma students are taking and passing college prep courses, so much that other schools are joining in the effort.

Most of us are familiar with Advanced Placement courses, where high school students can earn college credit in high school. But with this program, the National Math and Science Initiative, hundreds of students here in Oklahoma are dramatically improving their scores.

Kids are back in school, and for many across our state, that means a new year of college prep classes.

Six schools from Lawton and the Mid-Del School District are partnering with the National Math and Science Initiative, a grant funded program focusing on improving students' AP test scores.

"It's been very beneficial to me," Tashawnya Edwards said.

Edwards goes to Midwest City High School. She says the program is enhancing her critical thinking skills, and it's paying off on her AP exams.

"I wouldn't be anywhere where I am at now. All the rigorous work has helped me be prepared for college," Edwards said.

On Tuesday, State Superintendent Janet Barresi agreed.

"They are learning critical thinking strategies that can apply to their everyday lives," Barresi said.

Just looking at the first two schools to adopt it, Carl Albert and Eisenhower, AP math, science, and English scores are up by 116 percent. Other Math and Science disciplines increased by 229%.

The grant pays for teacher training, equipment, and supplies. Students getting a head-start on college are encouraging others to join them.

"There's no reason not to take the class. Just be patient because it is going to be tough," Edwards said.

Three new Oklahoma schools are joining the program including Tulsa Memorial, U.S. Grant and Enid High Schools. They have just been awarded a three year grant.

Eisenhower High School was recognized as the program's "School of the Year."

The National Math and Science Initiative is used in more than 500 schools across the country.
