The Oklahoma City School Board will meet Monday in a special session to discuss and possibly appoint an interim superintendent for Oklahoma City Public Schools.

The board will hold the special session at 10 a.m. at Northwest Classen High School. Current OKCPS Superintendent Karl Springer will retire August 30 after five years with the district.

The state Board of Education has granted the district's request for an exemption to the superintendent certification requirements for this school year, which the school board says allows it "to explore all possibilities" in the search for an interim superintendent.

There are reports state Commerce Secretary Dave Lopez will be appointed interim superintendent; but Lynne Hardin, the OKCPS Board of Education chairperson, says the decision has not yet been made.

"This is a critical decision for the future of the school district, and one the entire board now needs the opportunity to fully consider," Hardin said in a statement. "The board will meet in special session… to discuss and, if the board so chooses, to appoint an interim superintendent."
