A traffic stop on Interstate 40 in the Texas Panhandle Saturday led to the seizure of more than $1 million in heroin and the arrest of the driver.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said a trooper stopped a 2012 Nissan Altima at about 2 p.m. Saturday for a traffic violation near Conway, about 25 miles east of Amarillo.

The trooper arrested the driver -- Roberto Beltran, 27, of Brawley, California -- after finding four bundles of heroin in the car's passenger-side rocker panel.

The DPS stated in a news release it believes Beltran was hauling the heroin from Los Angeles to Tulsa.

Authorities said those bundles weighed more than six pounds and the heroin was worth $1,075,101.31.

The trooper booked Beltran into the Carson County jail on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
