My 2 Cents: Tulsa's Brady District Gets A 'New' Name

Tulsa City fathers tonight settled the simmering Brady Street controversy. You ready for this? I'm a bit surprised they could even keep straight faces when they brought this solution to a vote.

A couple of weeks ago I told you that Brady Street, home to the Brady Arts district (Tulsa's Bricktown), was named for one of Tulsa's founding fathers, Tate Brady, a man who also apparently had ties to the Ku Klux Klan.

Some demanded that the city change the name of the street. Tonight, they won. Brady Street will now be changed to... Brady Street.

I'm not making this up. Old name: Brady Street. New improved name: Brady Street.

Tulsa City fathers voted to change the name from Brady Street, to M. Brady Street, after famed Civil War photographer Mathew Brady.

To answer your next question, no I haven't found any ties between Mathew Brady and the city of Tulsa. Although one Tulsa councilor explained it's fitting because Mathew Brady, a New Yorker, was an artist and Brady Street is in an "arts district".

Why not T. Brady St., because Tom Brady is a quarterback and Tulsans love football? Some unimpressed Tulsans are suggesting Marcia Brady Street.

By the way, they did decide to give that part of Brady Street through the Arts District an Honorary Name.. "Reconciliation Way" will be posted on top of the Brady St. signs.
