My 2 Cents: Touring The 'New' OKC

Whenever we have visitors I offer to take them downtown to show them what Oklahoma City has become, but Saturday night I did something better, I took my mother on a tour of the NEW Oklahoma City.

Mom remembers the bustling downtown of the 40's and 50's... the decline of the 60's and 70's... and the stagnation of the 80's.

And while she knows all about MAPS, she really hasn't gotten to see how the vision of the 90's has snowballed.

I mean, to see it on TV is one thing, but to stand in the shadow of the Devon Tower is something else all together.

We drove from the booming Medical complex, across the new Crosstown, thru the 16th street Plaza district, to Uptown and 23rd, the Paseo, then Midtown, Automobile Alley, Deep Deuce, Bricktown and down to the River.

She was floored by how much cleaner it is, all the new streets and sidewalks, and she raved about the landscaping and art.

Then we stopped for dinner, I wanted the sun to go down so she could see it at night, and again she was star struck.

We caught it on a big concert night, she was stunned by all the people, all the limos and the lighted carriages

When we were done, Mom summed it up best.. she said I can't wait to tell people about how my City has changed, but I don't know where to start!

So if you know an older person who hasn't been able to go downtown in a few years.. take them.. I promise they'll be amazed, and so will you because through them you'll understand just how far Oklahoma City's come.
