Lincoln County Sheriff Charlie Dougherty says Rhodes stepped outside the restaurant for a "smoke break."

Dougherty says the county employee who had been watching Rhodes left the keys in the ignition to the county truck he was driving. Rhodes hopped in and drove away.

"He's been a model inmate," Sheriff Dougherty said. "But for whatever reason he turned rabbit."

Police near Amarillo, Texas caught up with Rhodes around 7:30 p.m. He gave up without a fight.
