The uniform craze in college football gets wackier and wackier each year. Gray uniforms have been the trend over the past two seasons. Matte helmets were in vogue before chrome came along this year.
But when Southwestern Oklahoma State posted a photo of a hunting camouflage helmet on the SWOSU Athletics Facebook page and Twitter, sports blogs nationwide went bonkers with the notion of a team competing in a camo helmet.
The only hitch: the helmet's not for real. The Bulldogs will not wear the camouflage headgear this fall.
The helmet is real, though, and will be sold at the SWOSU Athletic Fundraising Auction this Saturday.
The helmet received so much attention and criticism online that SWOSU Athletics sent out the following via Twitter (@SWOSUAthletics),
"To reiterate, the camo helmet is a promotional item that will be available next Saturday (Aug. 3) at our annual fundraiser auction."
The takeaway is that the college football realm just isn't ready for the Advanced Timber look.
