Most of us earn sick and vacation days at our jobs. For state employees some of the personal time off they don't take can be saved. When they leave their state job, they can actually cash out some of their unused time off. We're paying for it.
State employees can accumulate up to nearly 500 hours to cash out.
In 2012 alone, 4834 staffers either changed agencies or left state government. They cashed in nearly 605,755 hours for a grand total of more than $12,027,756. Individual payouts range from $0.16 - $30,372.19.
