Blake Bell has never started a game in his Sooner career but that didn't stop the junior quarterback from being named to the Maxwell Award watch list on Monday.

Bell, the popular favorite to win the starting QB gig in Norman in 2013, hasn't thrown a touchdown pass in two seasons but has garnered attention for his effectiveness in goal line situations, where he has scored 24 touchdowns in the "Belldozer" package.

That spot role has earned him early consideration for one of college football's most prestigious awards.

The Maxwell is given annually to the college football player of the year by the Maxwell Football Club.

Two former Sooners have won the award. The first Oklahoma recipient was running back and flanker Tommy McDonald in 1956, who never lost a game in his OU career under Bud Wilkinson. Most recently was Heisman-trophy winner Jason White in 2004.

Bell is one of five Big 12 players named to the list, including Texas quarterback David Ash, Kansas State running back John Hubert, Baylor running back Lache Seastrunk and TCU quarterback Casey Pachall.

Also on the list is Tulsa running back and special teams dynamo Trey Watts.
