Tulsa firefighters and Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers responded to a single-vehicle wreck on westbound Interstate 44 near 145th East Avenue around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

While traveling eastbound, A Tulsa Police officer reported seeing a wrecked Jeep Cherokee and someone getting into another vehicle nearby. The officer was unable to make contact with the driver.

The SUV struck the cable barrier, taking out about 12 supports before coming to a stop with the cable piercing the vehicle's body panels.

OHP Trooper Whit Cochran said the cable barrier almost certainly helped avoid a wrong-way driving situation and possibly a head-on collision.

"They (cable barriers) probably save quite a few head-on collisions," Cochran said.

"This vehicle would have most likely traveled into the other lanes and could have, depending on the traffic, caused a head-on collision."

Cochran said that there were no known injuries, but due to the absence of the driver, this could not be confirmed.
