Braves Draft OSU's Hursh In First Round Of MLB Draft

Posted: Updated:

Oklahoma State pitcher Jason Hursh was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the first round of tonight's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Hursh was the 31st-overall pick, and his selection marks the second-straight year the Cowboys have had a player drafted in MLB's opening round; Andrew Heaney was the No. 9 overall pick by Miami in 2012.

It also marks the third time in OSU history the program has had MLB first-round draft picks in consecutive years. That previously occurred in 1967-68 (Larry Burchart, Danny Thompson) and 1983-85 (Robbie Wine, Dennis Livingston and Gary Green, Pete Incaviglia).

Hursh is coming off a sophomore season for the Cowboys in which he was an All-Big 12 Conference Second Team pick and was named to the Midseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List. The right-hander finished the season 6-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 16 starts. He tossed three complete games, worked 106.1 innings and racked up 86 strikeouts.

Hursh was previously drafted out of high school in 2010 when the Pittsburgh Pirates took him in the sixth round.

As a freshman for the Cowboys in 2011, Hursh made 10 appearances, including four starts, and was 1-1 with a 2.73 ERA. The native Texan was forced to miss the 2012 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
