An EMSA paramedic is sharing his story after surviving the tornadoes out in the open.

Joshua Conrad said he was going to pick up a family member when he got stuck in the storm. So he got out of his car and ran, so he wouldn't be by trees.

Conrad said he ended up taking cover in a ditch.

"I didn't want to be around anything that could be large and be thrown at me. So I just found an area there wasn't a whole lot of trees and there was lower land," said Conrad. "I looked for ditch that was going to be narrow enough that I wasn't going to have a car or a tree that would come and land on me. I tried to find one that was as deep as I could."

Conrad got a bruise on his shoulder, but was otherwise unharmed.
