Gray Shuts Down Baylor In Big 12 Tournament Opener

Posted: Updated:

After starting Thursday's Big 12 Tournament game against Baylor with six straight balls, Oklahoma starting pitcher Jonathan Gray had a brief chat with catcher Anthony Hermelyn. Not much was said, but whatever was said shook Gray out of his poor start.

The big right hander proceeded to dominate Baylor, limiting the Bears to three hits while striking out 12 to lead the Sooners to a 2-0 tournament-opening victory.

The game was delayed three and a half hours due to rain after the tournament was postponed a day and reformatted due to the tornado in Moore on Monday afternoon.

The Sooners were able to squeeze out just enough offense against Baylor starter Dillon Newman, who went the distance for the Bears, giving up just six hits and a walk in a losing effort.

Oklahoma struck quickly in the first inning as Craig Aikin singled to lead off the inning and Jack Mayfield followed with a double to score Aikin from first base.

In the third inning, the Sooners racked up three consecutive singles with one out, the final one from Hector Lorenzana which scored Max White from second base.

That's all the offense Gray would need and it's a good thing, too. Newman retired the last 14 batters he faced, while Gray retired 15 of the last 17 batters he faced.

The fourth inning was the only moderately difficult inning for Gray, as Nathan Orf doubled to left to begin the inning. After getting two outs, Gray hit Adam Toth with a pitch to put runners on first and second. However, he coaxed a fly out from Grayson Porter to end the threat.

Oklahoma faces Texas Tech Friday at 9 a.m. in Game two of pool play.
