Police arrested a man caught on surveillance video stealing thousands of dollars' worth of steel from a construction yard near 51st Street and South Lewis.

Investigators identified the suspect as Carl Brown, 45, who was located and arrested Thursday around 10:35 a.m., near 54th and South Utica.

According to the arrest report, Brown took 18 metal beams, each one three to four feet long, one six-foot beam, nine pieces of angle iron and some bolts and nuts, all amounting to about $3,100 worth.

Police said the surveillance video caught the suspect throwing items over the fence, stashing them behind a dumpster, then returning for them later.

When a still photo from the video was posted on Crime Stoppers, another officer recognized him as Brown. That officer came across Brown going through a dumpster Thursday morning, a report says.

The officer showed Brown the photo and the arrest report states Brown admitted that his friend climbed the fence of the construction yard and threw things over to him, while Brown said he put the metal in his friend's truck.

According to the report, Brown told police his friend sold the metal for $24.
