Oklahoma

Max White scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the 12th inning to propel No. 16 Oklahoma to a 3-2 triumph over TCU in its Big 12 Conference opener Friday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

The Sooners ran their winning streak to eight straight games and posted their fifth walk-off win of the 2013 campaign thanks to the victory over the Horned Frogs.

OU tallied 14 hits, marking the 15th time in 2013 the Sooners have collected at least 10 hits and fifth game in a row. White led the way at the plate with a 3-for-5 effort. Matt Oberste doubled in the 12th to extend his hitting streak to 27 consecutive games dating back to the 2012 campaign, which is tied with Marty Neff (1991) for the longest such streak in program history.

Ethan Carnes tossed a perfect top of the 12th and earned the victory, improving to 1-1 on the season. Junior starting pitcher Jonathan Gray put together another strong performance on the hill, matching his career high of 12 strikeouts over nine innings. Senior lefty Jake Fisher tossed two scoreless frames in extras.

White opened the 12th a base hit up the middle, and then went to third on Oberste's double to left center. After Dylan Neal drew an intentional walk, White scampered home on a passed ball to provide the winning margin for the Sooners.

OU landed the game's first punch in the second. Kolbey Carpenter drew a one-out walk and scored one out later on a single to center by Haley.

Gray had a no-hitter going through five innings, but TCU's Cody Jones broke it up with a leadoff double to center in the sixth and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Boomer White to tie the game at one.

Oklahoma regained the upper hand in the eighth as Mayfield shot a single back up the middle and scored on an RBI ground out by Oberste to put the Sooners back in front, 2-1.

The Horned Frogs did not quit, though. Jerrick Suiter sent a leadoff single through the left side and scored one out later by way of a sacrifice fly to center by Jantzen Witte to even the score at two.

Oklahoma takes aim at the series win over TCU Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. First pitched is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.

Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State extended its season-long winning streak to eight games Friday as the 20th-ranked Cowboys opened Big 12 Conference play with a 5-0 victory over Baylor at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

Jason Hursh and Zach Fish were the heroes for the Cowboys as that duo helped OSU improve to 19-3, with Hursh tossing another gem on the mound and Fish providing power in the middle of the lineup.

Hursh worked eight innings and struck out eight, two shy of his career high, and the sophomore righty allowed just five hits and one walk to improve to 3-0 on the season while lowering his ERA to 1.04.

The game was a pitcher's duel early between Hursh and BU's Dillon Newman and entered the sixth inning still scoreless.

The Bears (10-13) looked poised to change that, however, as Nathan Orf led off the sixth with an infield single and Cal Towey followed with a double.

With runners at second and third and no outs, Hursh got Duncan Wendel to ground out to third before striking out Adam Toth. Up next, Steve DalPorto worked a full count, then send a sharp grounder up the middle. But Hursh snagged the ball and tossed to first to get out of the jam unscathed.

Riding that momentum, Fish and the Cowboys finally got to Newman in the bottom of the inning. Gage Green was hit by a pitch with one out, and after Aaron Cornell flied out, OSU perfectly executed a hit-and-run play as Tanner Krietemeier delivered a single through a vacated hole at shortstop to put runners on the corners.

That brought Fish to the plate, and the sophomore took a first-pitch strike before sending an opposite-field shot over the wall in right field to give OSU a 3-0 lead. The home run was Fish's team leading fifth of the season

OSU added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, with Saulyer Saxon executing a safety-squeeze bunt to bring home the fourth run before Robbie Rea scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.

After Hursh tossed eight scoreless frames, OSU called on Brendan McCurry to close things out in the ninth. The junior gave up a pair of hits but left those runners stranded to seal the win.

The two teams return to action Saturday in a game that has been rescheduled for noon due to the possibility of inclement weather.
