OKLAHOMA CITY -

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a 19-year-old man from Sasakwa was killed Thursday morning when he crashed into a school bus filled with children.

Troopers say around 7:30 a.m., Shane Denton was traveling south on State Highway 56 about seven miles south of Wewoka. There was a Sasakwa school bus stopped on the highway, loading children. A pickup truck was stopped behind the bus.

The OHP says Denton swerved to miss the bus and the truck. His own pickup truck began to skid, so he pulled the vehicle back. Denton lost control and slammed into the broadside of the bus.

Denton was trapped in the wreckage for 30 minutes, and later died from his injuries.

There were 22 children on board the bus. One was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. The student was treated and released. The student's age was not released, but troopers say the ages of the children on the bus ranged from 5 to 15.

Troopers closed the highway for about an hour while they investigated the crash and cleared away the wreckage.
