Oklahoma State Takes Game One Of Weekend Series With UC-Davis

STILLWATER, Oklahoma -

Oklahoma State erased a two-run deficit en route to four unanswered runs as the Cowboys ran their winning streak to six games with a 4-2 victory over UC Davis Friday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

Gage Green and Victor Romero picked up clutch hits in the contest, as well as connecting on a huge defensive play, and Vince Wheeland tossed three shutout innings in relief for his second win as OSU improved to 8-1 on the season.

"I'm very pleased with this win; that was a quality win against a good team," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. "It was a come-from-behind win, and it was a win in elements with the wind and the cold temperature that sometimes makes it hard to fire up an offense.

"We responded well and continued to play well throughout. We had outstanding relief pitching and some clutch hitting, and that's a good thing."

Both starting pitchers kept the offenses off the scoreboard over the first four innings. But in the fifth, UC Davis got to Cowboy right-hander Jason Hursh when, with runners on second and third and two outs, John Williams delivered a two-RBI single through the right side.

That lead did not last long, however. In the bottom of the inning, a one-out triple off the wall in right field by Zach Fish and back-to-back walks to Romero and Robbie Rea loaded the bases with one out.

Green, who has now hit safely in seven-straight games, then stepped to the plate and singled off the glove of Aggie second baseman Steven Patterson to bring home the tying runs.

In the sixth, Green played the role of hero once again. Following a two-out double by Nick Lynch, Patterson singled to left field, but Green came up firing and threw a strike to the plate, where Romero tagged out Lynch trying to score the go-ahead run.

"That throw Gage Green made was a huge play in the game and (it was) a nice tag home plate by Victor Romero and to keep that game at 2-2 after we'd fought to tie it, the momentum stayed in our dugout," Holliday said.

In the seventh, it would be Romero's turn with the bat as the senior catcher continued his hot hitting with a leadoff home run to right-center field off UCD starter Harry Stanwyck to put OSU up, 3-2.

That was all the Cowboys needed, though they did add an insurance run on an RBI double by Randy McCurry in the eighth, as Wheeland was dominant in relief of Hursh.

The junior right-hander came out of the bullpen to start the seventh and recorded five strikeouts while not allowing a hit as he improved to 2-0 on the season.

The two teams return to action Saturday at 1 p.m.
