An Enid man says he's on the hook for a parking ticket
received by the previous owner of his used suburban.
John White purchased his 1999 Chevy Suburban after spotting
the vehicle on Craigslist. The vehicle was sold by a man living in OKC for
$2,600 on Feb. 7, 2013.
"We went to the tag agency. They signed over the title to me
and that was it. We shook hands and walked away," says White.
But that wasn't it. White soon received a notice for
parking the Suburban illegally in January, a month before he actually purchased
the vehicle. The parking citation showed the Suburban was ticketed for being
parked on the grass at the home of the vehicle's previous owner in January.
"I spoke with [the former owner] last night to see he'd come
to court with me. He just hung up," says White.
In court, White says he was shown a bill of sale for the
suburban with his name on it. The document showed that he purchased the vehicle
in July 2012, putting him on the hook for the parking violation.
White says the document was forged and refuses to pay the
$135 ticket out of principle. He has another court date in a few weeks.
News 9 spoke with a man identified to us as the man who sold
the suburban to White. He says he "may" have received a ticket in the suburban.
"I'm in the process of paying it," the man told News 9.
The Used Motor Vehicle and Parts Commission says bogus
documents and used car buyers being on the hook for the unpaid tickets that do not
belong to them is all too common. It advises anyone buying a used car
never to pay in cash.
