Thousands Of Oklahomans Still Without Power After Winter Storm

More than 33,000 OG&E customers are sitting in the cold and dark Tuesday morning after the winter storm knocked out power across the state.

More than 21,000 of those customers are in Enid. According OG&E spokesperson Christine Dukeman, crews are in Enid repairing downed and damaged power lines as fast as they can. Because some roads are still impassable in northwest Oklahoma, the power company has sent helicopters out to assess some areas experiencing outages.

Dukeman says while snow and ice weighed down power lines, wind was the primary culprit behind most of the damage. They don't have a time estimate on when power will be restored.

News 9's Chris McKinnon drove through Enid Tuesday morning. He and his photographer encountered down power lines across Highway 81 and had to be diverted. He said neighborhoods are completely dark, and the only light is coming from the flashing lights of emergency vehicles.

The Public Service Company of Oklahoma also reports about 4,500 power outages in western Oklahoma in Beckham, Custer and Washita counties.
