MACU's Shorter Top All-SAC Men's Basketball Team

Mid-America Christian senior Charlie Shorter is Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year for 2012-13, headlining the All-SAC Team.

Shorter was selected by a vote of league head coaches and is joined on the list of superlatives by Newcomer of the Year Angelo Lewis, also of MACU, Freshman of the Year Kofi Josephs of John Brown, Defensive Player of the Year David Johnson of Oklahoma Baptist, Coach of the Year Clark Sheehy of John Brown and Sportsmanship Award winners Graham Faulkner of USAO and Tyler Kennedy of Lubbock Christian.

Shorter, a 6-1 guard from Dallas, Texas, averaged a league-best 22 points per game and also averaged 4.2 rebounds per game. He cleared the 2000-point career mark this year.

Lewis is a 6-4 junior from Detroit, who averaged 14.6 points and 8.2 rebounds for MACU. Josephs, a 6-5 guard from Birmingham, England, averaged 10.4 points per game for the Golden Eagles.

Johnson, a 6-1 senior guard from Chicago, routinely guarded the toughest assignment for OBU's defense and had 62 steals for the season.

Sheehy coached JBU to its first-ever regular season SAC title, going 14-2 in the league with a 25-5 overall record.

Shorter and Johnson are joined on the All-SAC First-Team by Norris Rumph of USAO, Coleson Rakestraw of JBU and Charlton Jones of Oklahoma City.

The All-SAC Second Team includes Donald Williams of Rogers State, Fayzon Richey of St. Gregory's, Chase Adams of Oklahoma Baptist, Abel Galliguez of John Brown, Eli Baker of Lubbock Christian and Angelo Lewis of MACU.

The Third Team consists of Brandon Cutler of USAO, Kendrell Thompson and Ken Holdman of Rogers State, Troynell Adams of OCU and Travis Payton of Wayland Baptist.

Making honorable mention are Reggie Fondren of WBU, Marques Anderson and Clinton Houston of Oklahoma Baptist, Jabril Durham, Jamaal Crayton and A.J. Luckey of LCU, Terry Johnson of OCU, Camilo Valencia of MACU, E.J. McWoods and Max Hopfgartner of JBU.

The Academic All-SAC Team includes JBU's Rakestraw and Galliguez, LCU's Kennedy, Aaron Stephenson, Anthony Brancato and Jaron Vierra, OCU's Jones, SGU's John Clark, Brock Vorwald and Ilya Chernov; USAO's Faulkner, Cutler and Shavon Scott and WBU's Theo Hatcher and Chance Billups.

Shorter Garners Second Straight SAC Player Of The Week Honor

The awards and honors just keep piling up for senior guard Charlie Shorter, as for the second straight week and time overall this season he has been named the Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week.

The newly minted SAC Player of the Year, Shorter saved his best for last by scoring a career-high 42 points in a narrow defeat 89-80 defeat to No. 3-ranked John Brown University and scored 22 in an 81-70 victory at St. Gregory's University. He also had seven rebounds and three assists against JBU and six more boards in the victory at SGU.

For the week, Shorter averaged 32.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 2.0 apg and leads the SAC with 22.0 ppg and two steals per game.

Shorter and the Evangels are set to play the Rogers State University Hillcats in the quarterfinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday night (Feb. 28) at 9:45 p.m. on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla.
