Education Department Proposes Changes To System Grading Oklahoma Schools

The Oklahoma State Department of Education is asking the public to comment on proposed changes to the A-F Report Card rule, the system that ranks the performance of Oklahoma schools.

The proposed changes come after educators across the state expressed concerns about the grading system. A panel of researchers from the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University called the system flawed and "meaningless for school improvement."

"I'm pleased with the changes we are proposing to the A-F rule and I understand that more changes may occur as we work through the public comment period and legislative session," said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi. "As always, my commitment is to a system that provides parents with information they can use to make the best educational choices possible for their children."

One of the proposed changes would give additional credit for each advanced class a student takes. Previously, advanced courses were only counted once regardless of the number of advanced classes one student was taking. The new rule would give schools credit for each advanced class a student takes.

The changes would also give the same level of credit to all advanced coursework. Last year, Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes were counted separately from other advanced classes. Smaller and rural school districts that do not have access to AP/IB classes said this was unfair, so the change would give all advanced coursework the same level of credit.

Another proposal would remove the school climate survey from the grading system. The education department says it was intended to measure the level of support within the school and community for the district's programs and administration. Many educators said the survey was an unfair measurement because it was a factor outside of their control.

The public can share its opinions about the proposed changes for the A-F Report Card rule until Monday, March 25 at 4:30 p.m. Written comments may be sent to Oklahoma State Department of Education, Room 1-18, Hodge Building, 2500 N. Lincoln Blvd., Oklahoma City, OK 73105. They can also be submitted to rules@sde.ok.gov.

There will also be a meeting so the public can verbally share their comments. It will be held March 25 at 10 a.m. at the State Department of Education, 2500 N. Lincoln Blvd., Oklahoma City in Room 1-20.
