My 2 Cents: 'Super Speeders' Suffer Little Consequences

Posted: Updated:

You're driving the speed limit. You check the rear view and here comes some crazy person closing on you at over 100 miles an hour. As he blows by, you just hope he doesn't hit you or anyone else. Would you call that reckless driving?

I sure would. But it seems officers rarely do; Very interesting analysis done by two reporters at the Oklahoman who studied Super Speeders in Oklahoma.

Like a guy from a couple of years ago who ‘YouTubed' himself doing 190 on the Kilpatrick Turnpike. They found most motorists stopped for doing in excess of 100 miles an hour, many over 120, several as high as 150 miles an hour, paid speeding tickets and court costs, and are still driving, even a few who were repeat offenders.

Only about 10 percent of the Super Speeders were ticketed for the much more serious reckless driving, which carries an automatic one year driving suspension.

It's a judgment call made by the arresting officer and prosecutors. No doubt suspending someone's license for a year causes them great inconvenience, but so does T-boning at innocent motorist who never saw what hit them.

Maybe we need to consider a one or 2 month suspension the first time their caught doing 30 miles an hour over the speed limit and lengthen the suspension each time after that.
