Rogers State Hits 12 Three-Pointers In Win Over Cavs

SHAWNEE, Oklahoma -

St. Gregory's couldn't overcome a long-range onslaught from visiting Rogers State Wednesday night, falling 79-69 at W.P. Wood Field House. The Hillcats were 12 of 24 from three-point range in winning for the third time in four games. The Cavs dropped their 17th consecutive contest.

The Hillcats were led by Ken Holdman, who had a game-high 23 points. RSU's Robinson Opong scored a career-high 22 on 8 of 13 shooting. His six three-pointers were one shy of a school record. SGU senior Fayzon Richey surpassed the 500-point mark for the season with a team-high 21. It was the third time in four seasons Richey has reached 500 points.

The teams had comparable nights overall from the field with SGU shooting 45 percent and RSU finishing at 46 percent. The Cavs had a 42-27 advantage on the boards, but the Hillcats scored 15 points off 18 SGU turnovers.

The Cavs shot at a 52 percent clip from the floor in the first half but trailed 40-32 after facing that long-range assault from RSU. The Hillcats hit seven 3s in the first 20 minutes, led by Opong's 4 of 6 effort.

The Cavs scored the game's first four points, but the Hillcats responded by going on a 14-0 run over a 5-minute span to lead by 10 with 11:45 left in the half. SGU cut it to 17-14 on a Richard Shields bucket just two and a half minutes later, but the visitors used an 11-2 spurt to take its largest lead – 28-16 – with 7:39 to go.

Dylan Lemley had seven points and four boards to lead SGU at the break. Opong had 14 to lead all scorers.

SGU came out hot in the second half, and Richey's corner three-pointer cut it to 40-37 just a minute in. But the visitors distanced themselves once again, this time via a 9-0 spurt to make it 49-37 with 16:18 to go. The Cavs were 0-for-4 with three turnovers during that stretch.

RSU extended its lead to 16 with nine minutes to play, but SGU didn't go away. Richey converted a conventional three-point play and later followed with a free throw to make it 60-51 with 6:58 remaining. The Cavs got within eight on several occasions late, but the home team couldn't complete the comeback.

SGU (6-19, 0-15 SAC) finishes the regular season at home on Saturday against Mid-America Christian. That game is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Rogers State (20-9, 8-7) concludes the regular season on Saturday as the Hillcats host Oklahoma City at 5 p.m. inside the Claremore Expo. The Hillcats will honor the six men's basketball seniors in their final game at the Claremore Expo prior to tipoff.
