Stars Split Doubleheader With Ottawa

Oklahoma City University fell 13-7 to Ottawa (Kan.) before picking up a 7-1 win Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.

The Stars, ranked No. 4 in NAIA softball, outhit the Lady Braves 25-20 but split the doubleheader to move to 3-2 on the season.

Ottawa plated three runs in the top of the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead.

The Stars answered in the bottom of the second when Drew Wright scored on a wild pitch and Tori Joyner doubled to right field and scored Shelbi Legg to make the score 4-2.

Ottawa added three runs in the top of the fifth and four more in the top of the sixth to extend its lead. LeeAnn Lopez doubled to right and plated Joyner in the bottom of the fifth to makes score 11-3 in favor of Ottawa.

The Stars posted a four-run bottom of the sixth to cut the Ottawa lead to 11-7. Jamie Rateliff started the scoring with an RBI single to and later scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning,

Legg doubled and Kyndra Holasek singled to drive in a pair of runs.

Ottawa pushed two more runs across in the top of the seventh to take the 13-7 victory.

Rachel Penner pitched 3.2 innings and struck out six batters and Elizabeth Oberst tossed 3.1 innings in relief with five strikeouts.

Holasek, Joyner, Legg, Lopez and Rateliff drove in one run apiece to lead OCU at the dish.

Rateliff got the Stars on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to left field to make the score 1-0.

Ottawa evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth.

OCU answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Emily Krienke scored on a throwing by the Ottawa catcher to make the score 2-1. Lopez followed with a two-RBI double to center to make the score 4-1 in favor of OCU.

In the bottom of the sixth, Wright homered to left and Joyner and Holasek each singled to drive in a run to push the Stars' lead to 7-1.

Oberst struck out two in the top of the seventh to close the door on Ottawa and give OCU the 7-1 victory. The senior from Benicia, Calif., allowed one run on six hits with 10 strikeouts to move to 3-0 on the season.

Lopez went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Stars at the plate.

OCU will return to action in the Central Arkansas Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Conway, Ark.
