OBU's Jones Sets Barbados National Record

Oklahoma Baptist made big strides, including a national high jump record, hitting 24 automatic and another 16 ‘B' standard qualifying marks at the University of Nebraska Tune-Up Friday.

Freshman Akela Jones set the Barbados national indoor record, clearing 6 feet and .75 inches to win the high jump. She broke her own six-day old school record set last week in Norman. The 1.85 meter leap edges out the 1.84 record established in 2004 by Desiree Crichlow.

Jones' leap is the new No. 1 mark in the NAIA this season. Jones also turned in the No. 3 time in the 60 meter hurdles at 8.62 seconds. Aspen Marical (8.99) and Denise Coroiescu (9.07) also had qualifying times but have better marks this season. Jones also won the long jump with a national-qualifying 19-2.75, but has a better distance on the books this year.

Jura Levy also improved on her No. 1 time in the 200 meters, winning in 23.91 seconds while Stacy Warrior turned in the No. 5 NAIA time at 24.82. Uniqua Cooper met the B standard at 25.82 but has a better time on record this season.

Warrior improved on her No. 1 time in the 400 meters at 55.04, while Marical became a new qualifier in the event with a B standard 59.90.

Hannah Helker had the No. 2 NAIA time in winning the 1000 meters in 2:52.11, while Kati Rogers turned in the No. 3 time in the event at 2:58.04.

Helker also won the 3000 meters with the NAIA No. 3 time at 9:59.52 with Miranda Dent qualifying at 10:28.76 and Katelyn Fritz meeting the B standard at 10:31.32.

The 4x400 relay of Warrior, Taylor Moore, Evan Shimanek and Jura Levy had the NAIA's No. 2 time in winning the 4x400 relay in 3:47.01. Clarissa Watkins, Marical, Mykia Jones and Cooper had a 3:57.88, which would be sixth nationally if two teams counted.

Moore qualified in the 600 meters with the No. 11 NAIA time of 1:37.18.

Johanna Kleinsasser qualified in the 5000 meters at 18:20.94.

The distance medley relay team of Rogers, Watkins, Kelsey Graham and Whitney Warfield qualified with the NAIA's No. 10 time of 12:30.94.

Shimanek cleared 12-5.75 for a qualifying mark in the pole vault but has a better height this season.

For the OBU men, Travis Hinton had the NAIA's No. 2 time in the 600 meters at 1:19.28 to win the event, while Travis Bish met the B standard at 1:22.48.

Adam Godwin turned in the No. 3 national time in the 1000 meters, winning in 2:28.46, while Zack Cates bet the B standard at 2:32.77.

The 4x400 relay team of Derik Douglas, Hinton, Bish and JyWayne Allen had an NAIA No. 2 time of 3:16.09 in winning the event Friday.

Cordell Baker recorded the No. 6 time in the 3000 meters at 8:28.14 and Caleb Wolters hit the provisional standard in the 5000 meters at 15:08.72.

Kenneth Combs (22.29) and Cole Swayze (22.36) had the 10th and 13th top NAIA times in the 200 meters, respectively.

Allen turned in the No. 6 time in the NAIA with a 49.36 in the 400 meters.

Rah-Man Byrd had a B standard in the 800 meters at 1:57.05.

In the mile, Cole Barnes (4:20.410 and Zack Cates (4:20.68) hit B standard times.

Blaine Bassler met the B standard in the pole vault at 15-5.75. Andy Peffer also cleared that height but has done better this season.

Douglas (8.15) and Combs (8.37) had automatic B standard times in the 60 hurdles, but both have better marks this year.

The distance medley relay team of Josiah Soap, Shaun Marshall, Cody Camacho and Clay Shepperson had a 10:25.50, meeting a B standard, but not their best time this year.

Ty Scarborough met the B standard in the triple jump at 46-1.25, but has a better mark this year.

Next up for the track teams are Indoor Nationals Feb. 28-March 2.
