Oklahoma Falls On The Road To Kansas

Posted: Updated:
LAWRENCE, Kansas -

Carolyn Davis had a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Kansas Jayhawks to an 81-71 win over No. 22 Oklahoma at Allen Fieldhouse Sunday.

The Sooners shot a season-low 27.6 percent from the field in the first half, falling behind by 12 points at halftime. While Oklahoma made a run late in the second half, the early hole was too deep to escape.

Aaryn Ellenberg led the Sooners with 21 points, but needed 26 shots to reach that number. Nicole Griffin added 17 points and nine rebounds, while Joanna McFarland chipped in another double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Monica Engelman scored 21 points for KU while Angel Goodrich had a double-double of 17 points and 10 assists.

OU has lost consecutive games for the first time this season and also missed a chance to reclaim second place in the Big 12 standings, after Iowa State lost to West Virginia earlier Sunday afternoon.

The Sooners started the game ice cold from the field, hitting just three of their first 22 shots. Meanwhile, Kansas was able to open up a 19-7 lead with 7:09 remaining in the first half.

The shots OU were missing weren't bad shots, but no matter what the Sooners tried, nothing wanted to fall. The Sooners were also undone in the first half by 11 turnovers.

Oklahoma eventually started making shots, but wasn't able to draw any closer to the Jayhawks, going into halftime down 34-22.

Kansas continued to pour it on in the second half, building the lead to 54-35 with 11:14 to play.

Oklahoma began to make a move, going on an 18-6 run to cut the lead to 60-53 on a layup from Sharane Campbell with 5:44 to play. The Jayhawks responded with a 6-0 run of their own to boost the lead back to 13.

The Sooners made one last push, getting the lead back down to seven with 1:55 remaining, but Kansas hit 13-of-16 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

Oklahoma will attempt to right the ship on Wednesday night at Lloyd Noble Center against Kansas State. Tip time is set for 7 p.m.
