Oklahoma Mother Talks About Son's Addiction To Synthetic Drugs

LAMONT, Oklahoma -

A mother of two says her oldest boy is addicted to synthetic marijuana, commonly called K-2 and Spice. Her son has spent hundreds of dollars on the man-made drugs often sold at gas stations and convenience stores. The scary thing is that under current law these chemical compounds are completely legal, although they aren't meant to be smoked.

Stores show this stuff disguised as incense and potpourri but kids have been smoking it to get high. The packaging Langley showed News 9 clearly states it should not be ingested.

"It's damaging, it's killing our kids," said Langley. "He's ruining everything from his work career to his history."

Langley has watched her son spends hundreds of dollars on the synthetic drugs. She explained that while he has been high on it, he has been a totally different person. She pointed out holes in the walls, busted out windows and broken furniture around the house and said it was all evidence of her son's rage as he comes down off of a high.

"He comes down off of it and he just goes irate. When he's on this I don't know how to explain it other than it's an addiction. I guess like a meth person," she said.

Police have told Langley in the past that the substance her son smokes had been tested and was legal to buy under Oklahoma law.

Meanwhile, a House committee has approved a bill to outlaw various kinds of new synthetic drugs, including so-called "bath salts" and artificial marijuana. The House Public Safety Committee on Wednesday approved a bill that was requested by the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs which adds 21 chemical compounds to a growing list of outlawed items. That list contains 200 compounds already on it.
