Baker's Career Double-Double Leads LCU Past SGU

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock Christian's Eli Baker had a career night in leading the Chaps to a 74-62 win over St. Gregory's Thursday at Lubbock Christian's Ripp Griffin Center. The junior forward equaled a career-high with 20 points and pulled down a career-best 21 rebounds as LCU swept the season series with the Cavaliers.

The Chaps (12-11, 5-6 SAC) pulled away in the second half behind Baker's effort and five second-half three-pointers from senior Jevvon Hunter. LCU hit nine from long distance for the game.

SGU (6-14, 0-10) dropped its 12th consecutive game despite outshooting the home team from the field. The Chaps, however, had a decided advantage on the boards, pulling down 41 to the Cavs' 18.

Cavalier senior Fayzon Richey had a game-high 23 points and seven steals. Devonte Young finished with nine points on 3 of 4 shooting. LCU's Hunter had 18, all coming on three-point shots.

The first half was marked by scoreless stretches from both teams. SGU raced out to an early 6-5 lead after making three of its first four shots. The Chaps responded by holding the visitors without a field goal over the next six minutes (0 of 10) during a 15-0 run to go up 20-6 with 11:57 remaining. Baker had 10 points during that stretch.

LCU went cold from the field, however, and the Cavs cut it to three with 5:28 left when the Chaps went scoreless over the next 6:19. Brock Vorwald and Young each had three-pointers to spark the visitors' run. The home team regained control, though, scoring the next eight points to make it 28-17 with 3:06 left. LCU had a 35-24 lead at the break.

The Chaps shot 46 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes and had a 24-9 advantage on the boards. Baker led all scorers with 16 points and 12 rebounds in the first half.

LCU came out firing after intermission, scoring 14 of the half's first 19 points to make it 49-29 with 14:11 to go. The Chaps made 3 of 5 from three-point range to start the half, two of which came from Hunter.

SGU whittled away at the lead and pulled to within 10 with 6:06 to play after Young made two free throws. But Hunter provided the dagger two minutes later when he extended a 63-52 lead to 14 with his sixth three-pointer of the game, tying a career high.

SGU concludes its West Texas trip Saturday against Wayland Baptist. That game is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Plainview.
