FORT WORTH, Texas -

Police in Fort Worth, Texas, are investigating the death of Thomas Boone Pickens, IV, the grandson of Oklahoma billionaire T. Boone Pickens.

Pickens -- who family and friends called Ty -- was a student at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. The university confirmed his death Tuesday. Dr. Kathy Cavins-Tull, TCU's vice chancellor for student affairs, released a statement about his death:

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of this member of our community and our hearts and thoughts are with Ty's family at this time. Staff members are available if students need to speak with someone about this sad news."

Jay Rosser, a spokesperson for T. Boone Pickens, said the family is deeply grieving the loss:

"Ty's loss at such a young age is an unspeakable family tragedy for the entire Pickens family and his many friends. We mourn his passing and respectfully request that the family be allowed to grieve in private in this time of sorrow."

It's not known yet how the young man died. According to TCU360.com, the university's student newspaper, Pickens was a junior strategic communication major. He was slated to graduate in 2014.
