The flu season's viral attack on classrooms throughout Oklahoma is getting worse for several schools. The uptick is forcing at least one Oklahoma City school to close its doors.

Antioch Christian Academy near S.W. 119th and Portland will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday. More than a third of the student body is home sick. The absences have faculty members disinfecting surfaces throughout the building.

Check school closings in Oklahoma

"By the end of the day, there were 29 kids that had gone home with influenza or related symptoms," Annette Schrag, Antioch Christian Academy principal said.

Schrag says the school board decided to cancel classes after talking with county officials, who recommend closure when 25 percent or more of the student body is ill.

In Duncan, school was back open Monday at Plato Elementary School after 10 percent of the student population became ill last week. In Edmond, custodians are not taking any chances as they battle germs after a slight increase in absences at Northern Hills Elementary.

"We were really caught off guard," Schrag said.

Antioch Christian Academy school leaders are hopeful some rest will do the trick. Schrag is recommending children stay home until their fever is gone for at least 24 hours. Classes at Antioch Christian are scheduled to resume on Thursday, but there is always a chance of further delay.

Antioch Christian school leaders say they may go as far as trying fogging agents to disinfect classrooms.
