Rocio Medrano had a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds, leading USAO to a 63-56 victory over St. Gregory's Saturday at USAO Fieldhouse. Medrano, a senior from Mexico, was 7 of 17 from the field and 9 of 10 from the free-throw line as her team won for the first time in nine games.

SGU (7-14, 0-7 SAC) cut a 10-point, second-half deficit to three late but couldn't overcome a rough shooting day from the field and the free-throw line. The Cavs shot only 33 percent from the floor and were 12 of 22 from the charity stripe.

Senior Leticia Silva led SGU with 18 points and nine boards. Freshman Ayrionna Taylor had 12 points on 4 of 9 shooting.

SGU led 29-27 after a first half in which neither team could maintain momentum. The Drovers built their largest lead of the period - 23-17 - with less than six minutes to play in the half. The Cavs quickly responded, however, reeling off seven consecutive points over a two-minute span to regain the advantage.

Neither team led by more than six in the first 20 minutes, and both teams shot less than 36 percent from the floor. Silva had a game-high nine points at the break.

The Cavs led by as many as five early in the second half, but the Drovers battled back. It was 35-31 SGU with 17:17 to play when the home team went on an 8-0 run to take a four-point lead.

The Cavs tied it at 43 with 12:22 left, but USAO again responded, this time by scoring 13 of the game's next 16 points to make it 56-46 with just more than eight minutes remaining. USAO's Celeste Smith made three consecutive three-pointers during that stretch - her only field goals of the game.

It was 58-48 at the 7:01 mark when SGU began to get back into the game. A Tess Robbins lay-up made it a seven-point game at the 3:11 mark, and Heather Anderson nailed a three-pointer with 2:28 to play to cut the deficit to 59-56. But the Cavs - who held USAO without a field goal over the final seven minutes - missed their last six shots and got no closer.

The Cavs return to action Thursday when they host Oklahoma Baptist. That game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip.
