The Okmulgee City Council voted to update a city ordinance to comply with new state law concerning carrying a weapon in the city limits. The council voted to delete the existing prohibition against carrying handguns in any form.

"Given the wording of the most recent state law, we...can no longer prohibit the carrying of a handgun - even in the absence of an SDA permit," City Attorney Michael R. Vanderburg said in a memo to councilors before the vote.

They can continue to prohibit carrying brass knuckles or a dirk, the attorney said.

The revised city code now reads:

"It is unlawful for any person to carry upon or about his person, either concealed or not concealed, any bowie knife, dirk, dagger, metal knuckler, or other dangerous or deadly weapon or instrument, except when doing so in the line of duty or as may be permitted by law."
