I heard a term today that I'm hearing more and more, and it's unique to the younger generation. The term is "Selfies". Are you familiar with it? Because I think it says a lot about that group.
A "selfie" is a self-portrait usually taken on a cellphone and frequently posted on social media or texted to friends. Because everyone wants to see or know what I'm doing, all the time, right?
There was testimony today that the alleged Colorado Theater gunman took some selfies before he went off.
I'm not comparing our teenagers to that guy, but there is a disturbing trend that we parents have been fostering for years, we're convincing our kids they're more special, more important and more accomplished than they really are.
The American Freshman Survey has been polling college freshmen since 1966, and guess what, students today are more likely to call themselves gifted, even though test scores don't support that theory. They're studying less too, but the survey found they have an increased drive to succeed.
Experts call it "ambition inflation" these freshmen have unrealistic expectations about their future success, and now worry how they'll handle it when they fail.
Next time you see a teenager taking a selfie, think about it.
