Vanderbilt Snaps Oklahoma's Seven-Game Winning Streak

Posted: Updated:
NORMAN, Oklahoma -

The first game in the post-Whitney Hand era for the Oklahoma Sooners did not go the way head coach Sherri Coale envisioned it.

The Vanderbilt Commodores had four players in double figures and turned 20 Oklahoma turnovers into 23 points en route to a 76-63 win over the Sooners Sunday afternoon at Lloyd Noble Center.

"You just go into the gym every day and try to get better," OU head coach Sherri Coale said. "You pay attention to the things you can control like how hard you run the cut, how hard did you set this screen, are you running on defensive transition, are you communicating on matchups. There are lots of things that we can control that we did not do very well tonight."

Christina Foggie led the quartet of Commordores in scoring with 17 points. Tiffany Clarke and Jasmine Lister each added 16 points, while Kady Schrann had 11.

For Oklahoma, Aaryn Ellenberg scored a game-high 21 points, with Nicole Griffin chipping in 11 points, and Morgan Hook scoring 10.

The Sooners shot just 37.5 percent from the field for the game, as the loss snapped a seven-game win streak for Oklahoma.

The Sooners struggled out of the gate, allowing 18 points in the paint to the Commodores and falling behind 37-27 at halftime.

"Our problem in the first half despite the fact that we turned it over repeatedly was that we just weren't guarding," Coale said. "That is a reflection of just being caught up in the emotion of it all and trying to find your way out of it and find your new role. That will get better, and over the holidays as they have time on the floor together it will improve dramatically."

Oklahoma cut the deficit to six just over three minutes into the second half, but Vanderbilt ripped off a 16-4 run to open up a 57-39 lead with 9:33 to play.

The run was highlighted by four three-pointers, all by different players. The Commodores shot 10-for-18 from behind the arc for the game.

"I though Vanderbilt played really well," Coale said. "They shot the ball extremely well from behind the three-point line, some of them were open looks but some of them were contested. We just had a hard time overcoming that."

The Sooners whittled the lead down to 67-58 with 3:15 remaining, thanks to seven consecutive points from Ellenburg, but Vanderbilt responded with a quick 9-0 burst to put the game away.
