Two girls remain in a Kansas City hospital after nearly drowning at a birthday pool party in Independence, Kansas on Sunday.

The incident occurred at 4:30 p.m. at the indoor pool in Ash Youth Center on North 10th Street in Independence.

Director of Recreation Brent Julian says the party was supervised and that the lifeguard on duty observed a young girl having difficulty. After pulling the girl out of the water and giving her CPR, another girl started to drown in the water.

Police said another adult pulled the girl out of the pool.  An employee at the center immediately called 911.

Both girls were airlifted to a hospital in Kansas City. A hospital spokesperson confirmed that one is listed in critical condition and the other in fair condition.

The girls are 7 and 8 years old.

Independence Police Chief Harry Smith says the situation would have been much worse had the lifeguard not been on duty.
