YUKON, Oklahoma -- Christmas is just around the corner and firefighters in Canadian County worry hundreds of children will do without.

For the past 12 years, fire departments in Yukon, Piedmont and Mustang have provided toys for needy families, but this year, donations are way down and with only a week left in the drive, it's not looking good for hundreds of kids.

"Twelve years, I've never seen it this low," said Captain Chris Walls with the Yukon Fire Department.

Captain Walls said the toy donations have not been coming in as they have in past years.

"If we don't get any toys, there's not going to be any toys for the kids and we don't want that," said Walls.

The department has participated in the annual toy drive for 12 years, bringing toys to needy kids at Christmas time. This year, roughly 600 kids are on the list.

"Every year it seems like we get more and more families in a hard time and we get more and more kids that we need to get toys to and every year it grows," he said. We've got less than a week to come up with toys for about 400 kids, so we need help."

Walls said he thinks the community just doesn't know they need the help and is confident once the word gets out, Christmas will be saved.

"Oklahoma always pulls together," he said. "We'll get it done one way or another."

Walls said they need new and unwrapped toys for kids of all ages, especially bigger ones like bicycles. You can drop off the new and unwrapped toys at the fire departments in Yukon, Mustang and Piedmont by December 14.
