OKLAHOMA CITY -

The frigid temperatures and possibility of snow have folks scrambling to buy new winter gear. Plus, EMSA is urging all Oklahomans to take precautions.

EMSA says the elderly will be especially at risk when temperatures begin to plummet on Sunday. But there are some common sense things we all can do to stay out of harm's way.

When Kap Thammavosjsa's sons walk to school on Monday, they'll wear new coats to get there.  Waiting for Christmas wasn't an option.

"Before, during, after, doesn't matter…I love ‘em, take care of ‘em. That's how it is," Thammavosjsa said.

EMSA says the elderly are especially at risk.

"Their temperature regulation is a little bit off, so they are not going to notice. [The cold will] set in a little faster," said Colin Roy with EMSA Field Operations.

Roy says right now the elderly need an ample supply of food, medications, medical supplies and a dependable source of heat.

"Make sure heaters are in order. Heaters are gonna work," Roy said.

Now is also a good time for all of us to stock up on windshield de-icer, ice melt, ice scrapers, and snow shovels.

"Something else that's invaluable when the weather gets bad is a cell phone. If you have one, carry it at all times," said Roy. "The technology is amazing and it really does save lives."

Bradley Shaw and his family stopped at ACE Hardware to pick up weather stripping, faucet protectors, and a blanket for their dog. Brad likes cold weather.

"I really am especially [ready for] the holidays, [it is] a great time of the year," Shaw said.
