Gundy Offered Tennessee Job, Reports Saying He Turned It Down

Posted: Updated:

CBSSports.com reported Wednesday morning that Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy was offered the head coaching job at Tennessee.  They have now updated their story stating Gundy will remain at OSU.

ESPN is also saying that Gundy will stay at OSU.  Brett McMurphy with ESPN tweeted "Mike Gundy remaining at Oklahoma State, sources told @espn."

Several other sources reported the same earlier Wednesday.  Sideline reporter Robert Allen reported on his radio show that Gundy is staying at OSU.

Jimmy Hyams from the Sports Animal in Knoxville, TN tweeted that "Mike Gundy is no longer in the UT coaching search, source said. Louisville's Charlie Strong remains a candidate."

Tuesday, rumors swept across the Internet that Gundy was hired to be the head coach at Arkansas, but those proved to be untrue.

News 9 and News On 6 will continue to follow these developments and bring you more information as it becomes available.

Gundy coached his alma-mater for eight seasons, calling the gig his "Yankees Job" or in other words, dream job. He led the Cowboys to a 66-35 record during his tenure, winning 48 games over his past five seasons.

The 45-year old Midwest City native was named Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2010 after leading OSU to an 11-2 season that included a victory over Arizona in the Alamo Bowl. He took it to the next level in 2011, earning the Paul "Bear" Bryant College Coach of the Year Award and the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award presented by the Football Writers Association of America after leading Oklahoma State to a 12-1 record, its first-ever Big 12 championship and BCS bowl game appearance.

Tennessee has had just one winning season since 2007, compiling a record of 28-34 overall and just 12-28 against SEC opponents during that stretch. In that time, Phillip Fulmer, Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley have all manned the position for the Vols.

OSU (7-5) will play Purdue (6-6) in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on New Year's Day and is set to open the 2013-2014 season against Mississippi State in Houston.
