Oklahoma City Police have confirmed the body of a woman found after a nearly 12-hour standoff is that of Janet Kay Hume, the 77-year-old mother of the mother suspect.

Police arrested 52-year-old Gerald David Hume Wednesday morning following a standoff at 11000 S. Bryant. Police went to the house the previous afternoon to check on Janet Hume's welfare. Relatives had contacted the police department after they became worried because they hadn't heard from the woman in several days.

Officers tried three times to check on Janet Hume, but they say each time, the suspect refused to let them in the house, saying either his mother wasn't there or that she was "doing fine." After the third encounter, police obtained a search warrant for the house, and that sparked the standoff.

When police finally entered the home early Wednesday morning, they found Janet Hume's body. Police arrested her son on one count of first-degree murder, and two counts of pointing a firearm at police officers. Police describe Gerald Hume as "severely mentally ill."
