Officers arrested a 52-year-old man described as "severely mentally ill" after police found the body of a woman inside the southeast Oklahoma City home the man shared with his 77-year-old mother.

Police arrested Gerald Dave Hume Wednesday on one count of first-degree murder and two counts of pointing a firearm following a nearly 12-hour standoff at 11000 S. Bryant. Although Hume lived with his mother, investigators aren't saying if the victim found inside the home was Hume's mother.

This all began when family members contacted police. They said they hadn't seen or heard from Hume's mother since November 5, and they were worried about her.

Police went to the home at least three times to try to check on the welfare of Hume's mother; on November 9, 11 and 12. They say each time, Hume refused to let officers into the house, telling investigators his mother was either gone or "doing fine."

During the welfare check on November 11, police summoned the bomb squad to the house because they found some suspicious items. Bomb technicians determined the items were not dangerous, and left the house.

A police spokesman says after the third failed attempt to make contact with Hume's mom, detectives finally had enough information and suspicion to execute a search warrant to go in and look for her. When officers attempted to serve the warrant Tuesday afternoon, Hume refused to let them in and that's when the standoff began.

Police say at 4 a.m. Wednesday, they finally forced their way into the home after negotiations to surrender failed. SWAT officers shot Hume with a bean bag gun and he was taken to a hospital for his injuries.

The State Medical Examiner is performing an autopsy on the victim. Police say her name and cause of death will not be released until the medical examiner has finished his review.
