Instant Analysis: Tulsa Crushes Houston 41-7

Posted: Updated:
HOUSTON, Texas -

What it means for Tulsa:

No doubt about it, this was a huge win for TU. To start, it gives the Hurricane revenge for last season's blowout loss at home. Houston won that game 48-16 and snatched the west division from Tulsa. It also eliminates Houston from the west division race, leaving SMU as Tulsa's only remaining competition.

What it means for Houston:

This was the Cougars' chance to make a statement at home. A statement was made alright, and it wasn't in Houston's favor. The loss eliminates UH from Conference USA title contention and they will now have to beat both Marshall and Tulane down the stretch to make a bowl game.

What I liked:

Everything. This was easily, far and away Tulsa's best complete performance of the season. All three phases brought their ‘A' game to Houston, resulting in a blowout win. If you want something specific, there's the 331 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Or the fact that the Golden Hurricane defense allowed just 261 total yards to a team that came in averaging 340 through the air alone. It was a complete domination by Tulsa.

Feel-good moment:

Defensive lineman Cory Dorris intercepted a Crawford Jones pass in the fourth quarter and took it back to the house for six. Dorris is a hard-working guy who gets overlooked sometimes, but recording his first career interception and taking it for a touchdown gave him a well-deserved spotlight.

Singleton watch:

This story just keeps getting better and better. Singleton ran for two more touchdowns Saturday, breaking TU's single-season touchdown record, previously set by Steve Gage in 1985. Singleton already has the single-season school record for rushing touchdowns as well as Tulsa's all-time rushing touchdown record. On a broader scale, Singleton also moved within two scores of tying Matt Forte on Conference USA's all-time rushing touchdown list.

Up next:

The UCF Knights come to Tulsa next week with what is likely to be the C-USA title game location on the line. If Tulsa wins the west, and UCF wins the east (both are likely), this head-to-head will likely decide which team will host the championship game. Combine that with a senior night atmosphere and Saturday should be a lot of fun.
