Oklahoma City Police say they have tentatively identified a man who was shot after a car chase and foot pursuit Sunday night in the southwest part of the city.

Verle Deljet Parton, 18, remains in critical condition at a local hospital. He is under police guard.

Police tried to pull over Parton for driving erratically near S.W. 59th Street and S. Agnew Avenue. Police say Parton refused to stop, so a police pursuit began.

Parton eventually jumped out of the car and tried to run away. Police say he also pulled out a gun. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon, but Parton refused. Officer John Baker, a 10-year veteran of the force, shot him.

It took police some time to establish Parton's identity. They say he's used several aliases in the past. He will be charged with attempting to elude police, but investigators say additional charges may be added later.
