Police say they were forced to shoot a man acting aggressively in the parking lot of a southwest Oklahoma City grocery store.

Officers were called October 25 to S.W. 59th Street and Walker to check on a man's welfare. When they arrived, they found 35-year-old Jerry Ray Pierce walking in the middle of traffic. When officers tried to speak to him, he ran to the Buy For Less parking lot. Officers say Pierce was aggressive. At one point, he had an extended, lock-blade knife in his hand and lunged at one of the officers.

Police say they were forced to fire their weapons in self-defense. Pierce was shot multiple times. An ambulance rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

Police say Pierce has a criminal record that includes previous armed assault on Oklahoma City police officers. Although he is still in the hospital, he has been arrested on two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon for this latest incident.

Both officers involved have been placed on routine administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
